What is resilience?
  • Resilience is the ability to recover from a setback and to cope and adapt during difficult times.
  • Resilience is not about smiling through adversity or ignoring what’s really happening. Resilient people still feel sad, angry or frustrated when faced with a setback. However, they find ways to move forward and approach challenges with creativity, hope and a belief in their ability to succeed.
Can I learn to be resilient?
  • Yes. Psychological research demonstrates that the behaviors, thoughts and actions associated with resilience can be learned and developed through practice. (Source: American Psychological Association.)
Is resilience important to my health?
  1. Yes. Research has shown that resilience protects mental and physical health. For example:
  1. People with greater resilience are better able to cope with adversity and recover from stress. (Source: American Psychological Association.)
  2. Resilience can lessen the effects of stress on the body, reducing risks of cardiovascular disease and improving overall wellbeing. (Source: American Institute of Stress.)
Why are we talking about resilience at work?
  • Helping employees build resilience is part of our commitment to fostering employee health and wellbeing.
  • Resilience can also help our organization. Research has shown that organizations with high proficiency in resilience are 1.8 times more likely to be high performing. (Source: McLean & Company Trends Report, 2022.)
